“And I Think It’s Gonna Be A Long, Long, Time…”
Y’all, the point of a cover is never to reinvent the wheel and churn out the exact same final product as your favorite artist. In fact, the mark of a truly great cover is the ability to keep the overall spirit while injecting your own personal flavor into it to create a fitting tribute to the artist, always complementing and never taking anything away.
Bluegrass quartet Iron Horse did just that when in 2007 they came together and crafted a finger pickin’ good cover of Elton John’s 1972 epic “Rocket Man,” turning the soaring ballad into a sweeping good time of a Bluegrass tune and presenting it beautifully with a 4-minute music video that shows the band recording “Rocket Man” in the studio, cut with vintage NASA clips for added nostalgia.
Here’s Elton John’s Original:
Fun Fact: This song is inspired by Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Rocket Man.”
A good song should take you away, if only for a moment; in Iron Horse’s case, their cover of “Rocket Man” takes us back to balmy summer nights spent stargazing and imagining worlds far bigger than our own and their Bluegrass sound in all its warmth and depth makes this Elton John classic feel an awful lot like being cradled by the soft grass and sticky air of our youth. Be sure to give it a spin via the video below and as always, enjoy!
