Most massive hits are released as singles before or alongside their albums, giving fans a taste of what’s to come. Singles often drive album sales and dominate the charts. Yet, some songs manage to become legendary even without ever being released individually. These tracks proved that an album track can leave as big an impact as a single. Here are four rock songs that became timeless hits, despite never being released as singles.
1. “Stairway To Heaven” – Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin rarely released singles, choosing instead to let their albums speak as complete works. “Stairway To Heaven,” released on their 1971 album Led Zeppelin IV, was never issued as a single. Guitarist Jimmy Page explained that the band didn’t want to “be a band that was known for singles,” emphasizing the album as a whole.
Despite this, “Stairway To Heaven” grew into one of rock’s most recognizable songs. Its slow-building guitar intro and powerful vocals have made it a standard in both classic rock and guitar culture, demonstrating that a non-single can become iconic.
2. “Thunder Road” – Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run album produced many famous tracks, but “Thunder Road,” the opening song, was never released as a single. Released in 1975, it introduced fans to Springsteen’s cinematic style, with lyrics painting a vivid picture of longing and escape.
Over time, the song became a fan favorite and a live show highlight. Even without single promotion, “Thunder Road” is now considered one of Springsteen’s defining works, showing how album tracks can leave a lasting impact equal to any chart-topping hit.
3. “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” – Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 album Electric Ladyland included several strong tracks, but “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” stood out despite never being released as a single. It followed the success of “All Along the Watchtower,” which was a single, yet “Voodoo Child” arguably became even more iconic.
The track showcases Hendrix’s unmatched guitar skills and improvisation, cementing his legacy. It became his only UK No. 1 hit despite being an album-only track. Today, it is one of Hendrix’s most celebrated recordings, inspiring generations of guitarists.
4. “Where Is My Mind?” – Pixies
Pixies’ 1988 album Surfer Rosa included the track “Where Is My Mind?” which would eventually become the band’s signature song. It gained fame years later after its inclusion in the film Fight Club, yet it was never released as a single.
The song’s haunting melody and surreal lyrics capture the Pixies’ unique sound. Despite being an album track, it has become an enduring alternative rock anthem, demonstrating that sometimes, the most memorable songs don’t need single status to reach legendary status.
