Clapton Still Dazzles at 80
Few guitarists have reached the legendary status of Eric Clapton. Since the 1960s, when fans famously spray-painted “Clapton Is God” across a London wall, his name has been synonymous with mastery and influence. Now, decades later, a new viral clip proves that the 80-year-old musician hasn’t lost his touch.
In a video shared on TikTok from his recent tour stop in Nashville, Clapton can be seen performing “Sunshine of Your Love,” his 1967 hit with Cream. The fan who posted the clip wrote, “Saw Eric Clapton in Nashville and at 80 years old, he blew the roof off the place.”
Viewers flooded the comments with admiration for the guitar legend’s performance. “He’s so awesome omgg,” one person wrote, while another declared, “STILL GOD.” A third fan added, “Clapton is astonishingly good. Best concert I’ve been to, and his band is phenomenal.”
The Hendrix Connection
“Sunshine of Your Love” remains one of Clapton’s most iconic songs — and its creation was sparked by another legend. In a 1988 interview with Rolling Stone, Clapton explained that the idea for the song came after attending a Jimi Hendrix concert in London.
“We’d been to see Hendrix about two nights before at the Saville Theatre, in London,” Clapton recalled. “He’d been here for about six months, and he played this gig that was just blinding. I don’t think Jack [Bruce, Cream bassist and vocalist] had really taken him in before; I knew what the guy was capable of from the minute I met him.”
Clapton continued, “It was the complete embodiment of the different aspects of rock & roll guitar rolled up into one. I could sense it coming off the guy. Jack took a little longer to realize what was happening. And when he did see it that night after the gig he went home and came up with the riff. It was strictly a dedication to Jimi. And then we wrote a song on top of it.”
