Brian Wilson Revealed His True Feeling About Rivalry With Beatles

via ABC News / Youtube

The Beatles and the Beach Boys didn’t just share fame—they shared admiration too. Sure, Mike Love playfully challenged “the Mop Tops” to a battle of the bands during their Hall of Fame induction, but as Brian Wilson once said, “There was that rivalry with the Beatles and the Beach Boys—a little bit, yeah, but not much. Not enough to scare anybody.” The competition didn’t tear them apart; it drove them to new creative heights.

Mutual Respect at the Songwriters Hall

In 2000, when Paul McCartney inducted Wilson into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it wasn’t empty praise. McCartney spoke warmly of Brian’s artistry: “(Wilson) wrote some music that, when I played it, it made me cry. I don’t quite know why. It wasn’t necessarily the words and the music. There’s just something so deep in it…” That description captured the emotional weight behind Brian’s harmonies.

Reflecting on this gesture, Wilson shared, “I had a wonderful time that night. I’ll never forget it.” Though they joked about collaborating (“I just think I’d be chicken. I think we’re all chicken, really.”), the emotional connection between Wilson and McCartney was clear. Brian’s admiration for Beatles-style songwriting and Paul’s appreciation of Wilson’s craft came through in every note.

Inspiration and Admiration Across Oceans

Brian Wilson was open about his early feelings toward the Beatles’ impact. He admitted feeling “jealous” when they took the world by storm in 1964. “I thought their songs were really good,” he said. Their rise pushed Wilson to reach for more.

And reach he did. The Beatles’ Rubber Soul inspired Brian to craft Pet Sounds—a record aimed to be “the greatest album ever.” Then, when the Beatles responded with Sgt. Pepper’s, Brian dove even deeper into SMiLE. As Mike Love put it, “Brian was always listening to (the Beatles). He always wanted to know what they were up to and he was measuring himself in comparison to them. But we were friendly, too… We liked each other. And we enjoyed each other’s music.”

Mike Love and the band even joined the Beatles on a spiritual journey in 1968, traveling to Rishikesh to study with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It’s clear their bond went beyond music—it was a shared path of exploration and growth.

Farewell from Friends: The Beatles’ Quiet Tribute to Brian Wilson

Today, the music world mourns Brian’s passing at 82. Ringo Starr and his wife Barbara offered a heartfelt message: “God bless Brian, peace and love to all the family… peace and love.” Though Paul McCartney has stayed private for now, the enduring connection between these musical giants speaks for itself.

Brian Wilson’s life and legacy were intertwined with the Beatles, not in rivalry, but in reciprocal inspiration and admiration. Together, they raised the bar for what pop and rock music could be—and the world is richer for it.
