Private Jet Crashes in Northeast Philadelphia, Sparking Emergency Response
A private aircraft crashed in Northeast Philadelphia moments after takeoff, setting off a fire and prompting an immediate response from emergency crews. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed the incident on Friday, stating that state resources were being deployed to assist.
Crash Occurs Near Residential Area
The jet went down less than three miles from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, an airport primarily used for business and charter flights. Witnesses described seeing thick smoke and flames coming from what appeared to be residential properties. The crash took place near Roosevelt Mall in the Rhawnhurst neighborhood, a busy area with numerous homes and businesses.
Flight Lost From Radar Shortly After Takeoff
According to flight tracking reports, the aircraft departed from Northeast Philadelphia Airport at 6:06 p.m. and disappeared from radar just 30 seconds later after reaching approximately 1,600 feet in altitude. A photo shared by the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management captured a large column of smoke rising from the site as emergency personnel arrived.
Aircraft Identified as Medical Transport Plane
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that two people were aboard the Learjet 55, which was reportedly being used for medical transport. The aircraft, operated by Med Jets, was en route to Springfield, Missouri, at the time of the crash.
NTSB Launches Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading an investigation into the cause of the crash. Philadelphia’s emergency management office has labeled the incident a “major event,” advising the public of road closures and ongoing disruptions in the area. Officials continue working to assess the situation and ensure public safety as the investigation unfolds.
