From Session Music to Chart Success

On August 22, 1970, the song by the band Bread hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 5 on the U.K. Singles Chart. The song, written by their lead singer David Gates, launched the group into international success with their smooth sound reaching a wide audience.

Bread was formed in Los Angeles in 1969 by four seasoned session musicians. David Gates, Jimmy Griffin, and Robb Royer initially came together on a project called Pleasure Faire, organized by music producer Russ Regan. Their musical chemistry led them to form the band Bread.

Recording and Release

Bread released “Make It with You” on their second album, On the Waters. Guitarist and songwriter David Gates performed most of the instruments on the track, except for the drums, which were played by Mike Botts. Released in June 1970, it quickly soared on the charts and held the No. 1 spot during the week of August 22.

Unexpected Rise for Bread

Before “Make It with You,” Bread had not broken into the top ten. This song became their first major hit and remains their only No. 1 single in the United States. In the U.K., the song reached No. 5, highlighting its international appeal.

Band Evolution

Following the success of the single, Bread continued releasing hits. While Mike Botts had become their full-time drummer in 1969, later band member Larry Knechtel—another skilled session musician—joined to deepen their sound. Their early reliance on professional studio musicians helped them craft a polished and memorable style.

Lasting Legacy

Although “Make It with You” was their only U.S. No. 1 hit, Bread went on to chart twelve more songs between 1970 and 1977. Their blend of soft rock, clear melody, and heartfelt lyrics helped define a musical style that resonated for years.
