The Ryman Auditorium, February 23rd

Jam packed with good times, great memories and even better music, Blackberry Smoke’s Find A Light Tour wrapped last week in Nashville following an explosive show at the Ryman Auditorium.

The Georgia natives took fans on a world class tour through their expansive musical catalogue, skipping through time to include “Up In Smoke” from 2012’s Little Piece of Dixie and our personal favorite, Find A Light’s “The Crooked King” – but magic, honest to God magic happened when Blackberry Smoke took a hard left on the second of their 2 night Ryman run to revisit a well loved Southern rock staple.

At the tail end of their set on February 23rd, Blackberry Smoke were joined by Marcus King of the Marcus King Band for a performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone” that absolutely blew the doors off of the Ryman with its power and intensity. One of the very few bands able to crack the complicated code that is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s unique rhythm section, Blackberry Smoke commanded the stage with an ease and grace that truly made for one of the most explosive moments of the evening.

With its easy feel and serenading guitars set to singer Charlie Starr’s impossibly smooth vocal delivery, suddenly “Tuesday’s Gone” isn’t just another cover – it’s an emotionally charged look back on a band who grew up to become the crown princes of Southern rock, by a band on target to fill the tremendous shoes left behind by those who paved the way.

Fun Fact: ‘Tuesday’s Gone’ is one of a few Lynyrd Skynyrd songs that drummer and founding member Bob Burns did not play on.

Starr was a force of nature as he pulled double duty on guitar and lead vocals, expertly channeling Ronnie Van Zant’s war of feelings about Lynyrd Skynyrd’s meteoric rise to fame while trading licks in an extended guitar jam with Marcus King and y’all, if that solo at the tail end of doesn’t get you out of your seat, I don’t know what will!

Check it out in the video below and relive the magic over and over again – this is a performance to be proud of, and one that Ronnie Van Zant would have adored!
