At the 2024 Grammy Awards, 74-year-old music legend Billy Joel graced the stage to perform his latest pop song, “Turn the Lights Back On,” marking his first venture into new pop music in decades.
Before his performance, Joel, accompanied by his wife Alexis Roderick and their two young daughters, Della Rose (8) and Remy Anne (6), walked the red carpet at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The 66th annual ceremony also featured performances by other music icons like Joni Mitchell, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Travis Scott, Fantasia, Luke Combs, and Tracy Chapman.
With five Grammy wins and 23 nominations throughout his career, Joel’s last Grammy stage appearance was in 2002, alongside Tony Bennett for their duet, “New York State of Mind.” He also performed the iconic song at the 1988 Grammys as part of a special New York musical presentation. In 2002, Joel received the MusiCares Person of the Year Award from the Recording Academy.
The new song, “Turn the Lights Back On,” was first hinted at during Joel’s December 19 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Despite initially stating there was nothing new to play, Joel revealed they had been working on something special.
This marks Joel’s first original release since “All My Life” on Valentine’s Day 2007, a love song dedicated to his then-wife, Katie Lee. According to The Post’s Chuck Arnold, the new single signifies a meaningful return from Joel, who, as a seasoned entertainer, seems to have a newfound appreciation for his enduring talents.
While Joel took a step back from songwriting in recent years, he continued to captivate audiences with live performances, maintaining his decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden, scheduled to conclude on July 25. Additionally, Joel is set to share the stage with fellow music legends Sting and Stevie Nicks later this year.
