Back in his wild rockstar days of the ’80s and early ’90s, Billy Idol was known for living life fast and loud. But one important part of his past flew under the radar for decades — until recently, Idol had no idea he had a son named Brant.

A DNA Test and a Big Surprise

Fans first noticed Brant standing proudly beside Idol at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2023. But now, the new documentary Billy Idol Should Be Dead shares the full story of how father and son finally met — and it all started with a Christmas gift.

“My husband just surprised me with a 23andMe, with a DNA test as a Christmas present,” said Idol’s daughter Bonnie in the documentary (via People). “And then a few weeks later, I get the results back on the app and open it and I’m like, who is this? This Brant. And it says his info’s like, ‘New York, 1985, looking for my bio (biological) dad.’ I was like, ‘What?’”

A Weekend With a Rockstar

Brant had always believed someone else was his father. But after his own DNA test raised doubts, he asked his mother — and that’s when things got interesting. “Well, it’s pretty crazy, but back in the day, we broke up and I actually spent a weekend with Billy Idol,” she told him.

If you’re wondering when this happened, just rewind to Idol’s Rebel Yell tour — his breakout moment in the mid-’80s.

“I Always Wanted a Boy and a Girl”

Now reunited with his long-lost son, Idol considers it a gift. “I really enjoyed being a dad. I always wanted a boy and a girl, and I finagled my way into a boy and a girl,” he shared in the film. “And I actually had a son that I didn’t realize, who I fathered on the Rebel Yell tour without knowing it. So I somehow finagled this as well.”

Sometimes, rock ‘n’ roll surprises come with happy endings.
