Bill Wyman has announced the release of his new album, Drive My Car, his first in nine years and the ninth solo effort by the former Rolling Stones bassist.
Scheduled for release on August 9, the album comprises 10 tracks, with two bonus songs available on the CD and digital versions. The collection includes covers of Bob Dylan’s “Thunder on the Mountain,” Taj Mahal’s “Light Rain,” and John Prine’s “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody,” along with five original compositions by Wyman.
“It’s not something I do every day,” Wyman shared in a press release, “but sometimes I just see a guitar in the corner of the room, pick it up to play around, and then something clicks into place.”
The first song from the album, the title track, has been released and can be heard now. Recorded in Wyman’s home studio, the album features guitarist Terry Taylor and drummer Paul Beavis. Wyman explained:
“I think the biggest influence on the album is J.J. Cale; his laidback groove has always appealed to me.”
Wyman takes pride in his unique sound, saying:
“Friends I’ve played it to have said things like, ‘It really sounds like you,’ and that makes me happy. I’ve never tried to be anyone else – I’m Bill, basically.”
Since parting ways with the Rolling Stones in 1993, a band he co-founded in 1962, the 87-year-old Wyman has been active with his group Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and released the solo album Back to Basics in 2015. He has occasionally reunited with the Stones, including a notable performance with Mick Taylor in 2012. In 2023, he contributed to “Live by the Sword” on the Rolling Stones’ album Hackney Diamonds, marking his first appearance on a Stones album since 1991.
