A Look at the Rock Legend’s Last Years

The BBC will broadcast a one-off documentary showing what it calls “the final chapter” of Ozzy Osbourne’s life, covering his path to performing at Black Sabbath’s farewell show in Birmingham. The program also follows his and wife Sharon’s effort to fulfill their long-held dream of moving back to the UK.

Filmed over three years, Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home will air on BBC One on Monday, 18 August, at 21:00 BST, and will also be available on BBC iPlayer. The one-hour film reveals the challenges the heavy metal frontman faced in getting fit enough to perform and the toll his health issues took. As daughter Kelly Osbourne remarks in the film, “Iron man wasn’t really made of iron.”

From Series to Single Film

The documentary gives audiences close access to members of the Osbourne family, including Sharon, Kelly, and Jack. Originally planned as a series called Home to Roost in 2022, the project became a single film as Osbourne’s health worsened.

Its release comes less than a month after the rock icon’s death, which occurred two weeks after his final appearance on stage at Villa Park for a homecoming show. The footage captures both the preparation and the emotion surrounding that moment.

BBC’s Tribute to Ozzy

Clare Sillery, BBC Head of Commissioning, Documentaries, said, “We are honoured to have had the opportunity to film with Ozzy and his family. The film captures an intimate glimpse into their journey as they prepare to return to the UK. It features family moments, humour, reflection and shows the enduring spirit that made Ozzy a global icon. We hope it brings comfort and joy to Ozzy’s fans and viewers as they remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.”

The production combines personal family footage with scenes from the planning of his final performances, offering viewers a rare look at both the public and private sides of the singer.

Behind the Scenes with the Producers

Ben Wicks and Colin Barr, executive producers at Expectation, the company behind the film, said, “It was an incredible privilege to spend the last few years with Ozzy, as well as Sharon, Jack and Kelly. Ozzy wanted to make it back to the UK and appear on stage one last time – our film is an inspiring and poignant account of him fulfilling that dream.”

They added, “Ozzy was loved by millions around the world not just for his music, but for his sense of mischief and his honesty all of which we saw plenty of in the final years of his life. But one thing shone through even more brightly to us, and that was Ozzy’s intense love for his exceptional family who were by his side through it all.”
