Art Garfunkel recently opened up about a touching reunion with his former musical partner, Paul Simon. After over a decade since their last performance together, Garfunkel admits their lunch was powerful. “It was very, very warm and wonderful,” he shared with The Sun. “There were tears. I was crying at a certain point because I felt I had hurt him – but there were hugs.” Garfunkel calls it a memory he’ll “cherish” and says the encounter reminded them of their enduring connection, despite years apart.

The Duo’s Legacy of Harmony

The last Simon and Garfunkel album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, came out in 1970, and though the duo reunited for special events like 1982’s Concert in Central Park, they haven’t shared a stage since the 2010 New Orleans Jazz Festival. While Paul Simon has retired from touring, Garfunkel has been recovering from vocal cord paresis and is now gearing up to release an album with his son, Art Jr. Their album, Garfunkel and Garfunkel: Father and Son, will be released on November 8 and even includes a fresh take on Simon and Garfunkel’s classic, “Old Friends.” Still, Garfunkel says he and Simon didn’t dwell on their past hits during the reunion, saying, “That speaks for itself.”

Honoring the Everly Brothers

Father and Son also pays tribute to the Everly Brothers, a duo that Garfunkel deeply admires. Their cover of “Let It Be Me” holds special significance as Garfunkel calls the Everly Brothers’ harmonies “supreme,” saying, “Anybody with ears knows that Don and Phil are not surpassed for harmony.” This admiration sparked a playful debate between Garfunkel and his son. Art Jr. interrupted, saying, “I think Simon and Garfunkel are equally as good or better,” which got a laugh from his father, who replied, “I’ll take a pass at this point!”

The new album includes covers of classics by artists like the Beatles, Cyndi Lauper, Cat Stevens, and American standards like “Blue Moon.” For Art Garfunkel, this project with his son seems like a full-circle moment, blending family, nostalgia, and a deep respect for music across generations.
