Arnel Pineda, Journey’s lead singer since 2007, has spoken out for the first time after offering to quit the band. The offer came after he faced criticism for his vocals during the band’s performance at Rock in Rio on September 15.
In a surprising move, Pineda asked fans to decide his fate with the band, saying:
“I am offering you a chance (especially those who hated me and never liked me from the very beginning) to simply text GO or STAY right here. And if GO reaches 1 million… I’m stepping out for good.”
Now, Pineda is back with a heartfelt message. He opened by apologizing to Journey’s fans for the confusion caused by his post. “Firstly, I want to apologize for the inconvenience I have caused all of Journey’s faithful fans out there,” he said in an Instagram video.
“I know the band’s not perfect right now and in turmoil, but who’s not going through some bad stuff these days?”
Pineda Thanks Journey Fans for Their Solid Support
In his candid video on Instagram, Pineda admitted he waited before posting again, taking time to reflect. “Bottom line, good has won,” he shared. “No matter how screwed our world is… maybe it’s caused evil in us in general, or the politicians or the religious leaders… But, yeah. Again, I said that good has won.”
Despite the initial negativity, Pineda expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from fans. “It’s overwhelmingly humbling,” he said, acknowledging that his post wasn’t about ego but rather a personal spiritual journey. Pineda reflected on how, since 2007, some people have attacked him online with cruelty and racist remarks. Yet, the kindness and encouragement from fans gave him hope.
“As soon as they saw my post, quickly and bravely they did not hesitate to send their kindness, sincerity, top-notch generosity… to express how genuinely caring and willing they are to fight for me.”
Journey’s Concert Continues with Pineda as Frontman
This wave of positivity has renewed Pineda’s belief in humanity. “There’s still so much good in this world,” he said, noting that the experience has reaffirmed his faith in people. While he acknowledged his critics, who he felt “relentlessly exploited my imperfections for your own selfish intentions,” Pineda maintained that the universe balances things out. “With god by our side, nothing could ever go wrong,” he added optimistically.
As Journey prepares for their next concert on October 19 in Japan, fans can rest assured that, for now, Pineda is staying with the band, thanks to their outpouring of support.
