Arnel Pineda Is Now More Important Than Steve Perry Says Jonathan Cain

Jonathan Cain believes that Arnel Pineda is now the guardian of Journey’s legacy.

In a recent interview, the interviewer remarked how surprising it is that Pineda has been Journey’s singer since 2007. Cain, the band’s keyboardist, responded:

“Steve Perry will always be recognized as the architect and the voice, but Arnel is the keeper of our legacy. We’re awfully proud of him.”

After 16 years with the band, Pineda is no longer considered the new guy. Cain affectionately calls him “the crusher” because of his ability to meet every challenge. He recalls a memorable moment when they played with Def Leppard for the first time. Joe Elliott, the lead singer of Def Leppard, was so impressed with Pineda’s performance that he looked at Cain, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Whoa, that kid can sing.”

In an April interview, Cain discussed the band’s long-term collaboration with Pineda. He mentioned that they are very pleased with him and plan to continue working together for many years. “Arnel’s 16 years with us is a significant milestone. It’s probably the longest tenure of any lead singer for the band. He’s been crushing it for us,” Cain said. He also noted that Pineda has his kids on the road with him this time, which makes him seem really content and happy.

Cain emphasized that they are proud of everything Pineda has accomplished and believe he still has many years left to contribute to the band. “There’s definitely still some gas in the tank,” Cain added. “We’re very happy with Arnel; he’s amazing.”

Despite the ongoing success with Pineda, Cain mentioned that he hasn’t had much contact with Steve Perry since their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Perry has shown no interest in reuniting with the band. Cain remarked:

“That’s his loss. Whatever. I don’t live like that. Your decisions and your relationships are what you make them. If he chooses not to have one with myself or Neal, that’s not my wish, but I’m understanding of his space, and I’ll leave it at that.”

Reflecting on Journey’s recent achievements, Cain shared:

“Journey just sold a million tickets on this last tour, our most successful one ever with Arnel Pineda, and I choose to be grateful for that. We have Arnel and that voice.”
