Florida Band goes back to their roots in Florida

Whipping Post” was written by Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band. The song appeared on their 1969 debut self-titled album.

VH1 said: “Whipping Post” was “what the band would become famous for, an endless climb of heightening drama staked out by the twin-guitar exorcisms of Duane and Dickey Betts and the cool, measured, almost jazz-like response of the rhythm section

The Allman Brothers Band was formed back in 1969 in Jacksonville, Florida. The band definitely has a southern rock vibe, but you can also hear blues, country music and jazz influence in their songs. The band is known for their jam-band capabilities. Making sure no two concerts sound the same… each one being on-of-a-kind.

Whipping Post facts!

  • Gregg wrote this on an ironing board using burnt matches. He got the idea in the middle of the night and couldn’t find a pen.
  • This became a staple of their live shows. They usually played it as an extended jam.
  • The chorus is written in 11/8 time, but the verses are written in 12/8. When asked by American Songwriter magazine how he came to compose such songs with progressions that are definitely nothing resembling blues or typical rock and roll, Allman replied that he’s not entirely sure. “Man, I just stumbled onto ’em,”

+Whipping Post lyrics below+

I’ve been run down
I’ve been lied to
I don’t know why,
I let that mean woman make me a fool
She took all my money
Wrecks my new car
Now she’s with one of my good time buddies
They’re drinkin’ in some cross town bar
Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I’ve been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I’m dyin’

My friends tell me
That I’ve been such a fool
And I have to stand down and take it babe,
All for lovin’ you
I drown myself in sorrow
As I look at what you’ve done
Nothin’ seems to change
Bad times stay the same
And I can’t run

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I’ve been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I’m dyin’

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I’ve been tied
To the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Tied to the whipping post
Good lord I feel like I’m dyin’
