The Long Run is the Eagles‘ sixth and final studio album before the band split in 1980. It was released during the tail end of the 70s and became one of the best-selling albums of the decade. This album placed them as icons of that era. Though the album was a huge success, it also hinted at the internal struggles that eventually led to the band’s breakup, especially after bassist Randy Meisner left and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit.

The album is packed with ten tracks, each showcasing the band’s signature sound and musical talent. Standouts like “I Can’t Tell You Why,” “In the City,” and “Heartache Tonight” are highlights, but the whole record is essential listening for Eagles fans.

I Can’t Tell You Why
This soft and melancholic ballad is sung by new bassist Timothy B. Schmit and perfectly captures the spirit of 70s soft rock. The song’s gentle rhythm and heartfelt lyrics make it one of the most emotional tracks on the album. Don Felder’s understated guitar solo adds just the right touch to the song, with a seamless blend that doesn’t overpower the song’s delicate feel.

In the City
“In the City” takes a slightly harder edge compared to some of the softer tracks in the album. With the track’s catchy chorus and Joe Walsh’s unmistakable vocals, it stands out as one of the most memorable on the album. Walsh’s gritty sound gives the song an energy that contrasts nicely with the more laid-back tracks.

Heartache Tonight
“Heartache Tonight” is a true rock ‘n’ roll anthem. This Eagles hit brings a bit of that old-school rock energy to the album. Its driving bass and upbeat rhythm make it one of the more energetic and fun songs on the record. Joe Walsh’s guitar solo, reminiscent of rock from the 50s and 60s, gives the track a nostalgic feel that fans of classic rock will love.
