A Laid-Back Legend Leaves Behind a Legacy
On September 1, 2023, Jimmy Buffett passed away at the age of 76 after a four-year struggle with Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer. Known for his breezy song “Margaritaville,” Buffett turned that single into a global brand encompassing restaurants, resorts, home goods, and more. He was surrounded by family, friends, music, and his dogs when he died, went the official announcement.
Despite battling cancer, Buffett continued to perform, making surprise appearances—including a show in Rhode Island in early July—until his health declined. After initial reporting didn’t mention the cause of death, his website later confirmed that Merkel cell carcinoma was to blame.

A Song That Became a Lifestyle
“Margaritaville,” released in 1977, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Buffett’s signature anthem. It launched his “trop rock” style and defined his laid-back persona, attracting devoted fans known as “Parrotheads.” From that song, Buffett built a lifestyle empire including restaurants, casinos, a cruise line, clothing, and even retirement communities.
In addition to songwriting, Buffett was also an author and actor, appearing in films like Hook and Jurassic World, and writing bestselling books including A Pirate Looks at Fifty. His musical and cultural influence earned him a posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.
Spotlight on a Rare Cancer
Buffett’s death sparked major attention on Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a form of skin cancer about 40 times rarer than melanoma and often more aggressive. Within days of his passing, searches and Wikipedia visits for MCC and general skin cancer surged. Doctors note that early detection of MCC significantly improves treatment outcomes, underscoring the importance of public awareness.
