Being a rock star can be more dangerous than it looks. Between pyrotechnics, stage stunts, and sheer chaos, many artists have had close calls in front of their fans. From electrical shocks to terrifying falls, here are ten moments when live shows almost turned tragic.

Alice Cooper built his legacy on shock and danger. But his elaborate stunts nearly took his life more than once. During a 1988 rehearsal, his infamous hanging act went wrong and left him unconscious. Cooper later said he wanted fans to believe, “This could be Alice Cooper’s last night.” For a moment, it almost was.

In 1995, Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler was touring behind his solo album Plastic Planet when severe food poisoning sent him to the ICU. He collapsed during a show, hallucinating and near death. “I was on a drip and everything,” he said later. The tour was canceled — but Butler was lucky to walk away alive.

Metallica’s James Hetfield nearly died in 1992 when a misfired pyro blast hit him during a concert in Montreal. Flames engulfed his arm, hand, and face. “I watched the skin rising,” he recalled. He suffered serious burns but survived — standing just a few inches closer could have ended his life instantly.

R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry was playing in Switzerland in 1995 when he suddenly dropped his sticks and fell to the ground. He thought it was a migraine, but doctors found two brain aneurysms — one already ruptured. Emergency surgery saved him, but the experience pushed him to leave R.E.M. two years later.

During a 1965 show in Sacramento, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards stepped to the mic and accidentally hit an ungrounded stand with his guitar. A bright flash followed, and Richards flew backward unconscious. Fans thought he was dead. Crew members rushed him offstage with oxygen tanks, and somehow, he lived to joke about it later.

6. Thom Yorke Nearly Shocked Poolside

In 1993, Radiohead performed at MTV’s Beach House show. After jumping into a pool mid-song, Thom Yorke climbed out and reached for his microphone — still dripping wet. A quick-thinking stagehand kicked it away just in time, stopping him from being electrocuted live on TV.

At the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic threw his bass high into the air for a dramatic finish. Instead, it came crashing down on his head. The blow left him with a deep cut and a concussion. Fortunately, he recovered quickly and laughed about it backstage with Queen’s Brian May.

10. Patti Smith’s Fall That Broke Her Neck

In 1977, Patti Smith slipped during a show opening for Bob Seger and fell 15 feet offstage, breaking her neck. She spent months in physical therapy but was lucky not to be paralyzed. “We needed more light and space,” she said later. “And I had an accident.”
