Just a few weeks before Janis’s untimely and devastating passing, she sweetly recorded a special birthday message to “friend” John Lennon. Most fans are not aware that Yoko Ono was the one that requested the shout out, as well from a few other artists of the time, after recording the “Burying Alive in the Blues” with the Full Tilt Boogie band.

“Hello John, this is Janis. We would just like to wish you a very happy and Happy Trails to You…until we meet again.”

Choosing “Happy Trails to You” by Dale Evans Rodgers, graced with the lyrics “until we meet again…“, the song represented a specific irony of which Janis was not aware, considering she had already passed 2 days before John received it. There is not much documented of the two star’s friendship, however, we can assume that they met at one point or another and were most likely fans of each other.

Interesting Fact: This birthday track, along with a session of “Mercedes Benz” was the last recording Janis ever made. She died just 2 weeks later from an overdose.

Having scarce closure between Lennon and Joplin, knowing that she recorded this just to make John and Ono happy, shows her generous and genuine character through and through.
