Planet Rock Live Session With Rival Sons
Fresh off of Black Sabbath’s farewell tour LA rockers Rival Sons are one of our favorite acts at the moment. Fearlessly blending singer Jay Buchanan’s love for all things blues with lead guitarist Scott Holiday’s lifelong affinity towards rock music, Rival Sons’ sound is a heady brew of everything good old fashioned rock and roll music should be and not surprisingly causes fans and critics alike to draw comparison between them and another band with an unmistakeable, unforgettable sound: Led Zeppelin.
To be fair, the guys in Rival Sons shun the comparison – no one could ever be Led Zeppelin and they really have no desire to be anyone but themselves, but damn does this cover of “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” get the wheels turning!
According to Jimmy Page, “Robert [Plant] came in one day and suggested that we cover it [“Nobody’s Fault but Mine”], but the arrangement I came up with was nothing to do with the [Blind Willie Johnson] original. Robert may have wanted to go for the original blues lyrics, but everything else was a totally different kettle of fish.”
Seen here during a Planet Rock Live Session, Rival Sons’ Jay Buchanan and Scott Holiday serve up a cover of the 1976 classic – a takeoff of Blind Willie Johnson’s “It’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine” – that proves to be a seriously foot stompin’ good time with Holiday holding it down on slide guitar while Buchanan takes listeners to church from atop his metal stool. If you haven’t checked these guys out yet, do yourself a favor and give the video below this article a spin – they’re really somethin’ else!
