The Voice Gets A Taste Of Stevie Ray Vaughan

One of the hottest shows on television, The Voice got a healthy dose of Texas blues when contestant Julien Martinez took the stage last night and brought with him a searing cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s iconic “Pride and Joy” that was so good, judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine actually battled to see who could turn around and get to him first. The 21-year-old teacher’s aide from Oxnard, California gigs regularly when he’s not working – though after winning the day with a bluesy performance that was equal parts honey and grit, something tells us that Julien won’t have to worry about booking his own gigs for quite some time!

Fun Fact: “Pride and Joy” was part of Vaughan’s live repertoire before he ever recorded it.

While Julien sang, Voice judges Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton all sat with their backs turned, listening and liking what they heard but not quite ready to commit to turning around; it wasn’t until Julien closed out his “Pride and Joy” performance with a guttural scream that he quickly got the attention of Shelton and Levine, who raced to slam their buzzers in hopes of snagging the singer for their team. We won’t spoil the surprise as to which team Julien ultimately chose, but we’ll give you a hint: there will be a whole lot of rockin’ and rollin’ going on!
