After 9 months of secrecy, The Who’s Pete Townshend made an incredibly happy announcement this week that when paired with his upcoming plans make a ton of sense. The 72-year-old rock legend is married and has been since December 2016, wedding longtime partner Rachel Fuller in a small, intimate ceremony after more than two decades together; Townshend took to social media earlier this week to make the announcement, reasoning that it “seems like a good time to tell everyone who doesn’t yet know” about the next phase in the pair’s relationship that he describes as “very, very happy thing for both of us.”
That being said, don’t look for Pete on the road any time soon; the newlywed is looking forward to a year long sabbatical once The Who finish up the rest of their touring obligations later this year. So why the secrecy? Easy: Pete and his lovely bride wanted to enjoy their happy moment privately and away from the public eye for as long as possible.
“Why did we keep it quiet? Really, we were being selfish,” wrote Townshend. “I have been away on tour so much in recent years, we just wanted to be together, and savour the moment.”
Totally understandable, Pete, totally understandable. Congratulations to you and your lovely bride and here’s to a long, happy union (and well deserved break!)!
