The Beatles – ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away’

Hey! You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away!

The highlight of John Lennon’s self-professed ‘Dylan phase’ was The Beatles’ ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away’, featured on their 1965 album Help!. It features Bob Dylan-esque vocals from John, and no percussion other than Ringo Starr playing a tambourine. This amazing video is a clip from The Beatles’ film Help!, and took place in John Lennon’s part of the band’s shared flat.

No wonder it’s so funny!

Name That Movie!

Help! was the second feature film made by the Beatles and is a comedy adventure which sees the group come up against an evil cult. The soundtrack was released as an album, also called Help!.

What strikes me about this video is how incredibly light hearted it is! We know that The Beatles were incredible musicians and composers both separately and as a group, but they were also remarkably silly and had a great gift for making innocuous things funny – the looks exchanged in the video by the band alone are hilarious!

Genius!

+ You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away  lyrics+

Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she’s gone I can’t go on
Feeling two-foot small

Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey you’ve got to hide your love away
Hey you’ve got to hide your love away

How can I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I’m in

How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey you’ve got to hide your love away
Hey you’ve got to hide your love away
