The Beatles – ‘Come Together’

The Beatles – ‘Come Together’ | Society Of Rock Videos

“This Thing Began In The Studio…”

Nothing symbolizes The Beatles and Abbey Road quite like the swampy, bass heavy ‘Come Together’. Credited as Lennon/McCartney but written by John Lennon, the song has come to symbolize everything from a botched political campaign and a call to unity, even to a self-portrait of John Lennon.

Regardless of what it’s meant to symbolize, ‘Come Together’ is an iconic song that defined the last few years with The Beatles and embedded itself into our collective consciousness!

Fun Fact: ‘Come Together’ Was Actually Written For Timothy Leary’s Campaign.

John said, “It’s gobbledygook; ‘Come Together’ was an expression that Leary had come up with for his attempt at being whatever he wanted to be, and he asked me to write a campaign song. I tried, but I couldn’t come up with one. I came up with this, ‘Come Together’, which would’ve been no good to him – you couldn’t have a campaign song like that, right?”

‘Come Together’ makes me smile because there’s nothing like it! There’s a strong emotional attachment to Abbey Road and the Abbey Road Sessions in general that exists, but more so with songs like ‘Come Together’ that are allowed to have a more ambiguous meaning – it can literally mean anything to anyone, which is the inherent beauty of it!

+ Come Together lyrics +

Here come old flattop, he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball, he one holy roller
He got hair down to his knee
Got to be a joker he just do what he please

He wear no shoeshine, he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger, he shoot coca-cola
He say “I know you, you know me”
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me

He bag production, he got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard, he one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knee
Hold you in his armchair you can feel his disease
Come together right now over me

(Right!
Come, oh, come, come, come.)

He roller-coaster, he got early warning
He got muddy water, he one mojo filter
He say “One and one and one is three”
Got to be good-looking cos he’s so hard to see
Come together right now over me

Oh
Come together
Yeah come together
Yeah come together
Yeah come together
Yeah come together
Yeah come together
Yeah come together
Yeah oh
Come together
Yeah come together
