Steve Gaines Composes Brilliance In Street Survivor’s “I Never Dreamed” Demo

Steve Gaines Composes Brilliance In Street Survivor’s “I Never Dreamed” Demo | Society Of Rock Videos

Genius Gaines

With the addition of talented musician, vocalist and composer Steve Gaines in 1976, Skynyrd’s “I Never Dreamed” graced their Street Survivors album that was released just 3 days before the infamous crash that took Steve’s, Ronnie’s, Cassie’s and Dean’s lives in one failed swoop. Recorded in early ’77, released on October 17, Street Survivors became the band’s most popular album, going gold and double platinum over the years. Although “I Never Dreamed” seems to be a forgotten classic over the years, the composition that Steve created still speaks volumes to this day.

Interesting Fact: Ronnie was quoted saying that the “band would all be in his shadow one day” about Steve Gaines.

About a man who lost the love of his life and desperately wants her back, “I Never Dreamed” tells a story of lost love, regret and struggle, that comes from Ronnie’s haunting vocals in this demo. With raw and pure expression, anxiety and pain, the track is considered one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s more emotional songs.

As well as a testament to Steve’s incredible mind when it came to music, this track also showcases Ronnie’s songwriting abilities that were on a transcendental level; proving that he was fulfilling his destiny on this planet as long as he could. Especially with lyrics like:

“I never dreamed that it could feel so good, Lord
That two could be one
I never knew about sweet love
So woman won’t you come back home
Oh baby won’t you come back home”

Chills.

+ I Never Dreamed Lyrics +

My daddy told me always be strong son
Don’t you ever cry
You find the pretty girls and then you love them
Then you say goodbye
I never dreamed that you would leave me
But now you’re gone
I never dreamed that I would miss you
Woman won’t you come back homeI never dreamed that you could hurt me
And leave me blue
I’ve had a thousand, maybe more
But never one like you
I never dreamed I could feel so empty
But now I’m down
I never dreamed that I would beg you
Woman I need you nowIt seems to me I took your love for granted
It feels to me that this time I was wrong, so wrong
Oh Lord now I feel so lonely
I say woman won’t you come back homeI tried to do what my daddy taught me
But I think he knew
Someday that I would find one woman like you
I never dreamed that it could feel so good, Lord
That two could be one
I never knew about sweet love
So woman won’t you come back home
Oh baby won’t you come back home
