In 2011, two of the biggest forces in the pop music world were brought together when someone crafted an absolutely brilliant mashup from The Jackson 5’s smash hit “I Want You Back” and The Beatles’ 1965 classic “In My Life,” creating a Frankenstein monster of a track that showcases the sweetness of “In My Life” set against the funky, danceable backdrop of “I Want You Back”.
Opening with the unmistakeable one-two punch that is the opening piano riff, bass drop and clatter of cymbals, “I Want You Back” is business as usual until it gives way to John Lennon’s double tracked “There are places I remember…” line, turning “In My Life” into a missing puzzle piece to “I Want You Back” and its theme of lost love instead of a love letter to times and places and people long gone.
Where many mashups of this nature tend to fall apart or just plain fail to make sense beyond the artist’s self-indulgence, “I Want You Back In My Life” works just as well as one cohesive unit as it does two separate entities, showing off the beauty that was the music we grew up with as well as the best of what both tracks have to offer on their own. Check it out in the audio below and as always, enjoy!
