A beautiful Tribute, To An Incredible artist

While Saturday Night Live’s cold opens are usually a typical hilarious parody of one of the week’s top stories, sometimes the show takes the opportunity to be a little somber. While this week’s show could have easily gone for a crazy parody of the 2016 Presidential Election, and joke about each candidate’s reactions to the results, the show chose to pay tribute to another artist we tragically lost this year.

SNL opened with cast member Kate McKinnon playing a tearful piano cover of Leonard Cohen’s popular hymn “Hallelujah.” The opening is incredibly emotional, and pays perfect tribute to the reverend artist everyone knew and loved. At the end of her performance, McKinnon looks into the camera with tears in her eyes, and says “I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”

Not only was it a great tribute to Cohen, it was the perfect way to begin the show giving everything that has happened this week. Many people are worried about the future, with the  result of the election and the transitioning to a new president in the coming months. But this was the perfect way to ensure everyone that everything will be okay, and we’re all going to continue on, no matter what.

Check out McKinnon’s beautiful tribute down below!
