Since the tragic death of legendary Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, his father Ray Burton has been the recipient of all of his son’s royalties, and as you could imagine, especially these days, that’s quite a large chunk of change. That being said, it begs the question of what a 92-year-old man would do with all of that money. Here’s a hint, he’s not keeping it for himself.
In a recent interview with Alphabettallica, Ray revealed that he has been quietly donating those royalties to Castro Valley High School (Cliff’s old high school) to cover scholarships.
Ray once said this in an interview with Ultimate Guitar. “I think Cliff probably would have done that with his money, because he was not against education by any means. He liked it very much.”
Even to this very day, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, Jason Newstead, and even Rob Trujillo all look up to Ray Burton as a father figure. He carries on his son’s legacy through being the good person that he is so it’s no surprise that Ray would perform this act of kindness on a regular basis.
