Jimi Hendrix Rocks Stockholm With “The Wind Cries Mary” Live | Society Of Rock Videos

Jimi Hendrix wrote “The Wind Cries Mary” in his apartment for his then-girlfriend, Kathy Mary Etchingham. They met in London on September 24, 1966. It was in 1969 when they began to drift apart.

The inspiration for this track happened when they had an argument about her cooking after which she stormed out and left to stay at a friend’s house. When she came back, she found out about the song. It was recorded on January 11, 1967 and released on May 5, 1967 in the United Kingdom and on June in the United States. This rock ballad was included in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Hits of All Time.”

Other musicians who covered this chart-topping song are John Mayer, Caron Wheeler, Popa Chubby, Jamie Cullum, Richie Sambora, Pat Boone, Robyn Hitchcock, and Xavier Rudd.
