J Marie Cooper Covers Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby”
She Can Make You Cry Happy Tears!
Though the original recording was from Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters, Janis Joplin’s version of “Cry Baby” was undeniably the most popular. She covered it with her usual blues-rock style and everyone just loved it. In fact, it became part of Janis’ repertoire and is something that her audience always looked forward to hearing. How she manages to put so much soul into one song is beyond me. She’s hands-down amazing! She wasn’t just a legendary blues artist but a very influential musician.
“Cry Baby” is Janis in full, passionate orbit. Her urge for drama, sometimes too hasty and spurting — not developed and sustained — is controlled by the solid foundation Full Tilt Boogie provides. She stays in control, and invitations to hysteria notwithstanding, gives a fantastic performance. — Rolling Stone
In this particular cover, J Marie Cooper sings this timeless classic. And man, she nails it! That incredible and soulful introduction took my breath away. She clearly knows how Janis does it — not just with powerful vocals but with that bouncy spirit she puts in every song. I almost had to do a double take when I listened to this version.
Emulating Janis is never easy and not everyone can pull it off but this one just made me feel like I traveled back in time!
