Janis Joplin became a struggling musician in San Francisco. Though she landed a few gigs, it wasn’t enough to propel her towards success and be known in the music industry. In 1966, she auditioned for Big Brother and the Holding Company. After she performed her piece, they were all blown away and asked her to join their band.

When they covered “Ball and Chain,” it was a massive success. They were praised mainly because of Janis Joplin’s powerful and soulful vocals.

“Cheap Thrills” was released in 1968 and earned the gold status in no time. It also paved the way for better opportunities for Janis.
