McVie Talks Her 16-Year Absence From Fleetwood Mac

Christine McVie couldn’t be happier to get back to doing what she was clearly born to do, and revealed in an interview that ultimately, it was the music that ended her 16-year absence from Fleetwood Mac and the stage.

She parted ways with Fleetwood Mac in 1998, citing a crippling fear of flying as one of the reasons for her departure and looking back on her time away, McVie reveals that her life became something unrecognizable before her very eyes:

“I think in my mind I was playing the role of the retired rich lady in the country, baking cookies, raising my two dogs and driving my Range Rover,” McVie told Jam:

“That kind of world ended up being inconsequential in the end – just nothing. It didn’t have any meaning at all, which slowly led to a bit of a dark place for me. I became very isolated.”

It took the help of a really great psychiatrist to help shake Christine of her fear of flying, making room for the coincidence of a lifetime – just as she was about to fly to Maui to surprise drummer Mick Fleetwood, Fleetwood called McVie first to announce that he’d be coming to England and wanted to see her, resulting in the pair flying back to Maui where McVie made her return to the stage after 15 years with Fleetwood’s blues band and finding her love for entertaining again.

The rest, as they say, is history. In 2014, after months of speculation and one off appearances here and there, Christine McVie officially rejoined Fleetwood Mac and just like with anything that’s simply meant to be, it was like she’d never left.
