1987 proved to be an amazing year for Aerosmith – fresh out of a career slump due to drug and alcohol abuse, the guys were enjoying the success of their hit album Permanent Vacation which featured hit songs like the power ballad ‘Angel’. The song was a tremendous hit for Aerosmith, and lucky for us, Steven Tyler even recorded an exclusive acoustic rendition featuring only him and a piano. Amazing, right?
‘Angel’ quickly climbed to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the second highest chart performance for any Aerosmith single, behind their #1 smash ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’.
I don’t know what I like more about this rendition of ‘Angel’; the fact that we’re able to concentrate on Steven’s emotional delivery of lyrics, or the extremely intimate setting of the studio where it was recorded making it feel like we caught Steven during a rare moment of solitude!
Either way, this acoustic piano rendition of ‘Angel’ goes into the books as one of our absolute favorite unplugged performances – ever!
