Bat Out Of Hell II: Back into Hell, 1993

The year was 1989 when Jim Steinman and Grammy-award winning recording artist Meat Loaf met together at the singer’s house for Christmas. After playing music together on piano, the two decided to embark on creating ‘Bat Out Of Hell II: Back into Hell’, the sequel to 1977’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’.

Production for the album would begin in 1991 and end in 1993. Recording took place at two studios, one being Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles, California and the other being at The Power Station in New York City, New York. The album would then be released on the 14th of September in 1993.

“I started writing what I felt was Bat Out of Hell part 2, definitely like The Godfather part I and part 2, that’s how I saw it. I wanted to do a continuation and I wanted to do an album that went even further and that was more extreme, if possible, which a lot of people felt wasn’t possible but I just wanted to see if I could make a record that was even more heroic because that’s what I thought of it … Bat Out of Hell to me was ultimately very heroic though it was funny … and I wanted to do one that to me would be even more heroic and more epic and a little more operatic and passionate.” Jim Steinman – BBC Rock Hour Special

The album would achieve huge commercial success. The album sold over 14 million copies worldwide and stayed at #1 on the Billboard 200 for a week straight. The single “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” reached #1 in 28 countries. Meat Loaf won a Grammy award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song.

This timeless album was and is unfathomably successful and it features some of the most iconic songs in all of music – songs that Meat Loaf himself would go on to perform even 25 years later. Happy Birthday, Bat Out Of Hell II!
