Owen Davey / YouTube
At 13 years old, one teenager has the metal community by the collar due in no small part to a video that’s been making the rounds all weekend. Multi-instrumentalist Owen Davey took the art of instrumental covers to a new level when he tackled Metallica’s 1986 masterpiece “Orion” from Master of Puppets on not just one instrument, but four. In a brief description on his YouTube channel, Owen recalls how he learned every single part on every single instrument, painstakingly stitching together each piece of the puzzle from the comfort of a recording studio until at last he had what he set out to acquire – an 8 minute video that showcases what a little creativity and a whole lot of dedication are capable of.
Fun Fact: The first live performance of “Orion” was during Metallica’s 2006 Escape from the Studio Tour when the band performed Master of Puppets in its entirety, honoring the 20th anniversary of its release.
Fiercely talented and wildly creative in his approach to crafting a cover of this Metallica classic, Owen’s definitely got our attention – if he’s this good at 13, we can only imagine what kind of magic of his own he’ll be crafting in a few years’ time!
