In the days and weeks leading up to the death of blues legend B.B. King last May, tributes and get well soon wishes poured in for the 89 year old guitarist. From Eric Clapton to Joe Bonamassa, the music world was pulling for one of its most prized legends, but none got to us quite like the one recorded by a 10-year-old boy from the UK.
Dressed in tiger striped pajamas and wielding what looks like a Gibson Les Paul, future guitar hero Toby Lee showed his love and appreciation for his idol B.B. King with a soulful, bluesy take on King’s “The Thrill Is Gone” from the comfort of his living room, happily strumming and plucking away at his guitar in hopes that Mr. King would see his video and at least crack a smile and rest easy knowing that his talents and gifts were inspiring a brand new generation of blues legends.
Fun Fact: Every Sunday, Toby records a cover while dressed in a fun onesie pajamas and calls them “Sunday Onesie Jams”. They’re so popular that he’s even sponsored by a company who makes fun pajamas for him to wear every week!
We don’t know if he saw it, but we know that King’s protege Joe Bonamassa saw it and shared it across social media, marveling at how incredibly gifted Toby Lee is as he begins his quest to become one of the next great blues superstars. Judging by this video, Joe is right about young Toby – with a gift (and style, we love those pajamas!) like this, we can only imagine the wonderful places his love for the blues will take him!
